Another boring Canadian eh?
When you read about the global economic meltdown and then look out your Canadian window or talk to your Canadian friend, do you wonder why the Canadian experience seems different? That is because it is different in Canada… pretty boring eh? I have been following the global economic lanscape for months (much like an armchair athelete plays sports). I am intrigued by Fareed Zakaria article “Worthwhile Canadian Initiative” published in NEWSWEEK magazine issue dated Feb 16, 2009
The legendary editor of The New Republic, Michael Kinsley, once held a "Boring Headline Contest" and decided that the winner was "Worthwhile Canadian Initiative." Twenty-two years later, the magazine was rescued from its economic troubles by a Canadian media company, which should have taught us Americans to be a bit more humble. Now there is even more striking evidence of Canada's virtues.
Guess which country, alone in the industrialized world, has not faced a single bank failure, calls for bailouts or government intervention in the financial or mortgage sectors. Yup, it's Canada. In 2008, the World Economic Forum ranked Canada's banking system the healthiest in the world. America's ranked 40th, Britain's 44th….

:-) thanks for sharing this.
You are welcome Leigh Anne. I am glad you dropped by.
we are too good at selling ourselves short here in Canada, too ready to accept the “boring” label from others. We have a lot to celebrate and live out with joy and pride.
I think your view is so true Nicole! I was gifted a poem by my partner this morning as we were discussing this subject. It might better be placed in a new posting but I feel it so rightly reflects our current global economic circumstances that needs to be here….
by William Wordsworth 1770-1850
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.–Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn; (1)
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea, (2)
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus (3) rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton (4) blow his wreathed horn.
Wonderful poem. I’m just itching to crosspost that somewhere, I know I will find just the spot. Thank you. The gift that keeps giving…
Hi Nicole… I did go ahead and a separate post for just the poem if that helps in cross posting. Here is the link http://terrill.gaia.com/blog/2009/2/the_world_is_too_much_with_us
Thanks. I love that picture! I crossposted before I saw it but may crosspost again just to get it in.
It was such a wonderful photo to take as they are the craziest birds and huge!
Hummm I just read this article in the Vancouver Sun about Canada’s federal dept…Debt, not deficit, is the elephant in the room http://www2.canada.com/vancouversun/news/editorial/story.html?id=5cb2083e-741f-489a-bd2d-4b89f5136b1e
So things may not be a rosy as we are sometimes led to believe in Polar Bear country.
O Canada!
it’s far from perfect, but workable, I think!
Thanks Paul and Nicole for stopping by. Yes, Canada is far from perfect and it has so much potential to do and be more… just like each one of us:)
