chocolate lilies and more

chocolate lily silhouetted in evening sky

As I lay on my side with my ribs up against a sandstone rock and my hip resting on the damp ground I hear a woman call out "hellooo!" Standing behind me, my partner David answers her. Then the woman gives a little gasp and an "oh!" escapes.

close up to a chocolate lily

We explain that I am laying on the ground to take photos of the chocolate lilies. "Chocolate Lilies!" she shouts and then spinning back in the direction from which she had come she shouts even louder "The chocolate lilies are here! The chocolate lilies are here!"

natural grace of chocolate lilies

Back down the trail another female voice echos the phrase to an answering "okay" from a male voice filled with tolerance who is even farther away.

soft brown of chocolate lilies

I take one last shot before relinquishing the field of wild flowers to the new arrivals.

Georgeson Island

Seals surface as an eagle cries out near its nest on Georgeson Island. The evening embodies peace and a recognizable still point.

Georgia Strait

Sun rests lightly on the far snow draped mountains. Evening is settling in. I could adjust the lighting but then where would be the spaces between the spaces that contribute to the evenings stillness?

New growth

New growth on the fir trees is pliable, soft  and cooler than the rest of the branch. My fingers keep reaching to caress. I wonder if the trees notice?

Old and new arbutus

David asks if I could capture the stages apparent in the life of this arbutus tree. He watches as I struggle to find the right angle.

snag at the water s edge

We sit together on a large piece of flat sandstone in companionable silence. I am distracted in my observation by random questions. How long ago was this a vibrant tree? How many birds have sat on its branch? When will it fall?

topless fir tree

A storm has long ago snapped the top off this fir tree. Yet, it seems not to notice as it decks itself out in new growth. Seagulls call out to each other in the stillness. I notice the moment for its perfection.

Seals surfacing

The water boils up as a group of about 15 seals surface. They seem to be fishing.

checking a crab trap

A boat comes from across Bennett Bay and slows beside a crab trap.

anchored for the night

A sailboat anchored in the bay shares the last of the evening light with us. We rise and begin to make our way down the trail. David recites a line from Speak Low... "love is pure gold and time is a thief"

I can just picture you getting those right angles, Terrill. Too long I've let my love of photography be tied into small cameras- my daughter's digging out our 'real cameras' now!

I'm going to share this blog and your amazing lilies with her. Thank you for showing them to us. I'd never heard of them!

Thanks Sherrilene, Nicole and Meenakshi for joining us on our stroll. Meenakshi I used a 35 mm film camera for many years and switched to a Canon EOS40D about 18 months ago. It is an expensive transition and a learning curve but worth it!

The chocolate lily has a lovely history. I looked for one page to share with you but instead have cobbled together a few pieces of information…

Chocolate lily. Rice-root. Checker-lily. Fritillaria lanceolata Nodding 2.5-cm (1”) bells, subtly mottled purple-brown and yellow-green, blooming in May & June. The narrow leaves are in whorls. Fritillaria lanceolata,  is native from British Columbia and Idaho to California where there are wet winters and drier summers.  Produces “rice-grain” bulblets. Bulbs were eaten by the First Nation Coast Salish, including the Squamish, Sechelt, Halqemeylem and Straits Salish. The bulbs were steamed in pits or boiled. Some have eaten the rice-like nodules on the bulb and reported that they taste vaguely like rice. These plants are rare and should not be disturbed if found in the wild.

Wow! Must have been a delicacy even then; I don't think anyone would eat them now that they're rare.

I would hope not Meenakshi. We have so many domesticated fritillaria species, some of which the bulbs are also edible, that it would be a shame to gobble up these few wild chocolate lilies.

Note to readers: please don't just have a taste of your garden fritillaria without researching its edibility first. As my mother used to say to me “if you get a belly ache don't blame me!”

Thank you for sharing your amazing adventure with us! Chocolate Lillies was a beautiful excursion for me….
You inspire me with your gentle way of bringing the quiet things to life…the topless fir speaks is a favorite of mine.
…The chocolate Lillies speak of Divine decadence…
when I see these things I think:
How can one not believe?? Some would argue…but really, why bother?

Thanks FastDart I am glad you enjoyed the photo essay. Somehow, it is one of the things that I MUST do in life. The process seems to simply flow from the time I think about picking up the camera until I hit the update button the last time on the blog post. Don't you just love it when that happens?

FastDart are you saying that isallaboutone is you? And that you took that great photo of the chocolate lily with wonderful background information about bugs and smell? Or that this blog created a puzzle for you?

Terrill, the photo is from robin44b's photostream. I'm the owner of itsallaboutone. The Chocolate Lily Jigsaw Puzzle was a cool web site I found. Your beautiful blog just allowed me to expand into the Puzzle that is me…perhaps someday I'll get all the pieces together and know the answer.
